Homeowners Beware! In our service area, we have been receiving a lot of calls asking for a second opinion. A few air conditioning companies in Ocala are making solicitation calls to customers they have serviced in the past as well as targeting potential customers. These companies are using “teaser rates” to service and inspect a/c systems for optimal performance. Once that company is in your door, the service technician is using the “shock” factor and informing the homeowner of a horrific mold problem in the system. The homeowner is told the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) will be informed at once and the homeowner will face huge fines if the homeowner does not allow the company to clean up the mold. The price quoted for this clean up averages about $3,000.00 plus the purchase of a UV light to prevent future mold.

Do Not Agree to this service! The EPA does not fine homeowners for mold. They do not even get involved even if mold is actually found in your home.

Steps to take if you have been in this situation:
• Ask the technician to show you the mold
• Ask questions: Is there a lot of mold or is the mold in just one or two places? Is there standing water or is the surface consistently wet to cause the mold? What guarantee can the technician offer you that if the cleanup is done, the mold will not return?
• Did the technician remove all panels to do the inspection? (most of the time, they do not remove any panels, but they should)
• Is the company appropriately licensed with the State of Florida, the County they are working in and what certification do they hold?
• Is the company insured?
• Will this service bind you to a costly and lengthy service contract with them?
• If you do have mold, GET A SECOND OPINION!!!! Mold cleanup does not cost $3,000.00!!! Most of the systems we have seen do not have mold!

If you do have mold, it is necessary to clean it up as it can cause health issues, especially for the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. Protect your health and your bank account. We at MAX-AIR Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. take our responsibility to our community very seriously. I hope you find this information helpful. Servicing and repairing your air conditioning system is a necessity, but protect yourself.

Why It Is Important To Have Your HVAC Equipment Serviced Regularly

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are a complex technology designed to keep our environment in the home comfortable and at the right temperature. In warmer climates such as Florida where air conditioning systems are working tirelessly for much of the year and not just in summer, these systems can often become faulty, less energy efficient and function poorly. It comes as no surprise when you consider how long and regular these air conditioning systems are being overworked in an effort to keep our homes at a comfortable temperature and at the right humidity.

It is well known that if we keep our cars serviced regularly by a mechanic and taking it for a check up or service every six months at the local garage, keeps us from getting that nasty surprise and a hefty bill which will inevitably come later if we don’t get it serviced regularly. So, the same rule applies here with your air conditioning system. An air conditioning repair bill can be very high if suddenly one day it stops working and malfunctions just because it has not had a regular service which might have found a small problem building up that eventually leads to huge damage and a large bill.

Mould and algae often accumulates in the wet drain system of air conditioning units, and if this is not properly cleaned away, it may well spell big damage much later down the line. It is recommended that your air conditioning unit should be cleaned and serviced at least once every 12 months. An air conditioning service will not cost as much as an air conditioning repair bill would. In fact, you could find you will save money by getting an air conditioning service at least once a year because it will iron out any problems or issues that may be building up in your HVAC system that you may well have been unaware of.

The same regular service should also be applied to those systems that provide heating as well as air conditioning. A well serviced and regularly maintained air conditioning system will also provide you with better energy efficiency. The more energy efficient your system performs, the lower your bills will be. A heating system that performs poorly will always work harder to heat up water, meaning your bills will be higher and your carbon footprint will also be that much bigger too.
